Cathedral Basilica

Cathedral Basilica

St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Kentucky, is a minor basilica, designated as such by Pope Pius XII on December 8, 1953. Construction began in 1895 under Bishop Camillus Paul Maes to accommodate the growing congregation, replacing a smaller 1834 church. The cathedral is renowned for having the world’s largest handmade church stained glass window, measuring 67 by 24 feet. Its interior is modeled after St. Denis in France and features murals by local artist Frank Duveneck, with a high altar made of Carrara marble and floors of Rosata and Breche marble.
