In 2025, the Cincy and Northern Kentucky Region will celebrate America’s upcoming milestone birthday with America’s River Roots, a signature event highlighting the Ohio River’s influence on American culture. From October 9-12, this four-day festival will feature music, cuisine, and cultural elements tied to the river’s heritage. Held along the Ohio River in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, the event will include regional tours such as the River Freedom Journey, Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, World Heritage Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, and the Ohio River Recreational Trail.
The port cities of Cincinnati, Newport, and Covington will host a lively waterfront event featuring 12 steamboats from 8 cities, each themed with regional music and cuisine. Pavilions will showcase the unique culture of each region, along with an expo on the Steamboat Age and river industry history. The “Sounds of the River” education program will also be available.
The event will celebrate American Roots music genres like folk, blues, country, Gospel, jazz, bluegrass, and more, with multiple stages featuring national and emerging artists. Highlights include unplugged performances and a River Roots Gospel revival. Local influence will be honored through King Records and the Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame.
Celebrity chefs will showcase river cuisine at Anderson Pavilion in Cincinnati and Metropolitan Club in Covington, while Ohio craft brewers and Kentucky bourbon distillers will offer tastings. The Purple People Bridge will transform into a bazaar of small businesses, offering dining and shopping, and the steamboats will serve cuisine based on their respective river city themes.
